Sugar Stories: Seaside Dreams Wedding Cake
Living in Virginia, and servicing largely the greater Washington D.C. area, I don't often get the chance to make a tropical-themed wedding cake, however this week's bride Ana and her Fiance Joshua married in their in-law's beautiful lakeside home, along a lake-beach and having an outdoor wedding, they wanted to play off the beachy-feel of the location and incorporate some sea-side elements and some bold color into their big day. Having spent the last several months working almost exclusively in white - this bold, colorful cake was a welcome relief.
The cake featured an ombre blue color palette and bold colorful blossoms for a tropical feel.
If you're paying attention to the Pantone color trends, then some of the biggest trending colors for this year and next year are bold oranges, bright pinks, and rich yellows. We used these vibrant colors in the floral arrangement of the bouquet and kept the palette of the cake to a hazy ocean-blue that went from a deeper blue at the bottom to a very light cloudy blue at the top. The bottom tier featured a swirled marble-effect fondant, which gave the illusion of gently lapping waves and the tier also featured some bas-relief sea shells, in coordinating colors and some edible crystals, which really caught the sunlight.
The cake featured bold and colorful sugar flowers and an ocean-blue canvas.
The bride's favorite flowers were roses, peonies and ranunculus, so the bouquet was largely composed of her favorites, we also added a few Dahlia flowers for some added drama and to give the bouquet variety and shape- pulling inspiration from several bouquet's that the bride had pinned to her Pinterest page. We added some bright greens to make everything pop and some delicate filler flowers. The cake was kept indoors and then taken outside into the gazebo for the cutting ceremony.
The bouquet incorporated the brides favorite flowers.
Ana loved Peonies, Roses and Ranunculus, which were all incorporated into the arrangement.
Working with bold colors in cake design can be intimidating, it's easy to go overboard and a design can look less than luxe- but by balancing the bold colors with softer, delicate tones, we were able to showcase the beauty of this color-palette whilst retaining a modern and elegant cake that the bride wanted. When working with bold colors it's a good idea to keep the color to either the decor, or to the cake itself- as this prevents the color becoming the overwhelming and overpowering focal point of the design.
The bottom tier included a delicate bas-relief effect with edible sea shells and candy crystals.
We simply loved designing and working with Ana and Josh to create their dream wedding cake, and we look forwards to creating some more colorful wedding cakes in 2019!!
